In collaboration with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Extension, Dr. Tom Barrera will be offering a special 2-day engineering short course titled, “Fundamentals of Lithium-Ion Battery Technology: Applications and Advances”, November 12-13, 2018 on the campus of UCLA, Westwood, CA, USA.

First offered in 2015, this short course has grown and evolved to emphasize the hands-on practical aspects of understanding lithium-ion battery (LIB) technologies used in today’s marketplace. A special focus on establishing a common baseline for fundamental LIB design solutions, test protocols, and performance characteristics is provided by using examples derived from industry. This approach makes the course of great benefit to a wide range of practitioners including industry engineers, scientists, and program managers seeking a stronger understanding of LIB applications.

The course also includes a comprehensive review of LIB safety in terms of abuse conditions, failure mode effects and analyses, hazard control identification, and risk management for reliable battery operation. Finally, relevant industry examples from various LIB consumer electronics, electric vehicle, and aerospace applications are examined. Special topics such as LIB recycling, re-use, transportation, and industry lessons-learned will also be presented.
